I pass this lovely scene on my walk each morning. I’ve been waiting for the sunflowers to bloom, and this week they have put on a show. When I shared the photo on Facebook, Carol Varsalona invited to write a poem to go with it for her Summer Gallery. For once, I won’t be putting it off until the last minute!

Sunflowers

Colored pinwheels greet the sun,
Dancing ‘twixt the fields of corn,
Blooming, blooming, every one.
Colored pinwheels greet the sun.
Won’t you join them in their fun?
That’s the way to greet the morn.
Colored pinwheels greet the sun,
Dancing ‘twixt the fields of corn.

Each Friday, I am excited to take part in Poetry Friday, where writers share their love of all things poetry. Tricia hosts the Poetry Friday Roundup today at The Miss Rumphius Effect.  Drop by and see what poetry morsels are offered this week.

  1. Perfect connection Kay, “pinwheels” and sunflowers–love this moving poem you penned, and that pic of the sunflower is exuberayting, thanks for these two summer treasures!

  2. This is a lovely triolet. I think it’s a hard form to master, but you’ve done a beautiful job.

    • Thanks, Tricia. I’ve enjoyed exploring the triolet form since I learned about it from the Poetry Princesses. It is looks simple when I read one, but they are deceptive in that and can be quite a challenge to write. I love the repetition and rhyme in them.

  3. A very “satisfying” poem… Love the repetition and the rhyme, and the image it gives – even without the picture.

  4. Yeah, Kay, you took me up on my invitation to create digipoetry. I like How you started and ended your poem -repetition is strong. I just bought a colorful fabric pinwheel for my grandbaby and as I read your poem the visual of the pinwheel and the sunflowers come into mind. When you have a chance this week send the image poem to me and #TheArtofSummering. Thanks.

    • Thanks, Carol. I love seeing your collection of seasonal poems each season. They are such a celebration! I will send it on to #TheArtofSummering. Can’t wait to see the spring collection!

  5. My daughter spent yesterday and today painting a sunflower. It looks pretty similar to yours. I’ll show her your poem 🙂

    • Thanks, Tabatha. I hope your daughter enjoys the poem. Sunflowers are my daughter’s favorite flower. I wonder if she’s seen this poem yet?

  6. Such a celebratory poem. Sunflowers are the best! Thanks for sharing your daily view and your poetic homage.

  7. I don’t have sunflowers anymore, but love seeing them. Yours are way ahead of what I’m seeing so far! I like the rhythm of your poem, Kay; they’re dancing!

    • I’ve enjoy watching these sunflowers grow this summer. Our neighbor planted them for his daughter’s wedding.
