Happiness is…

Happiness is
planting straight rows of seeds
in freshly turned dirt,
waiting for them to sprout
into leafy greens and crunchy carrots,
sniffing the first lilac blooms.

Happiness is
paddling around the curves of a winding river,
watching a great blue heron
splash water as he takes flight,
licking chocolate mint ice cream
scooped into a waffle cone.

Happiness is
hiking through vibrant reds and yellows and oranges,
crisp leaves crunching under foot,
roasting marshmallows to squish
between choclate and graham crackers,
watching campfire flames dance and crackle.

Happiness is
watching snowflakes swirl and glisten
while I curl up beside the fireplace
with a mug of cocoa and a favorite book,
bundling up in hat and scarf and gloves and coat
to build a snowman in the front yard.

Happiness is
found all year round.

PO-EMotions graphicAfter watching and reading the April poetry challenge by Mary Lee Hahn at A Year of Readingfor the past several years, I decided to write a poem a day this month. Mary Lee is hosting PO-EMotion, with a different emotion for each day of the month. Today’s focus is HAPPINESS. For even more poetry fun throughout April, check out the roundup of poetry celebrations and projects at Jama’s Alphabet Soup.

A year FULL to the brim with happiness! I just planted a row of beets and took a minute to get one more sniff of my hyacinths before they are gone for another year!

I planted spinach and onions today and then my husband picked a bouquet of lilacs for dinner tonight.

Each time of the year holds such special moments, but I want to be gliding along down that river, spotting the blue heron. Lovely capture of each season, Kay.

Thanks, Linda. Spotting the heron is breathtaking–once I recover from the surprise!

Indiana is pretty landlocked, but we do have a beautiful river that winds through our county.
