Darkness Falls

Last night I sat on the back porch
and watched the dark fall softly,
tucking gently around the end of day
like the blanket wrapped snugly around my shoulders.
Rain dripped and glistened
along the dark silloheutes of bare branches
stretching against an ever-changing canvas.
Pearl gray clouds caught the lingering light
of a setting sun I could not see,
then deepened to an inky blue
that blotted out both moon and stars.
The gathering dark washed out the colors
of the barn and swings
as rain dripped and trickled and plinked.
I sat still and silent
as the darkness wrapped me
in its cool embrace,
wishing my swirling thoughts
would settle into rest
as day slid into night.

PO-EMotions graphicAfter watching and reading the April poetry challenge by Mary Lee Hahn at A Year of Readingfor the past several years, I decided to write a poem a day this month. Mary Lee is hosting PO-EMotion, with a different emotion for each day of the month. Today’s focus is SORROW. For even more poetry fun throughout April, check out the roundup of poetry celebrations and projects at Jama’s Alphabet Soup.

Today is also the Poetry Friday Roundup. Discover more poetry hosted by Robyn at Life on the Deckle Edge.

This description of night falling pairs nicely with Steve’s sunrise poem today! I agree with Carol about those first four lines. Gorgeous language.

I was struck by the beauty of falling darkness when I sat still long enough to watch it. I will head over to check out Steve’s sunrise poem, too.

This poem is lovely – wistful and yet comforting at the same time.
Thank you for sharing, Kay – Happy Poetry Month.

Silence allows you to hear the world around in a new way. Lovely.

I wrote this in response to a book I was reading–Learning to Walk in the Dark. It gave me so much to think about.
