If you’re looking for a good “beach read,” I cant think of any better books than those by Sarah Dessen. Yes, I know we are far from any beach, but these books would work while you’re lounging by the pool just as well. Just ask Shelby G, Shelbi N, Cheyanne H, Brittany H, or Emily D. They are probably carrying a Dessen book with them right now.

If you like a seriously spooky story, check out books by Neal Shusterman. Lurlene McDaniel describes herself as the “crying and dying” writer. I warn my students that her books are addictive–you can’t stop with just one. Explore what EmilyR, Dakota R, Allie V, Kamryn S, and Kassidy F discovered about how McDaniel turns tragedy into hope through these glogs and posters.

JK Rowling is another auther that has been hard to miss–unless you’re a muggle living under a rock somewhere. I first encountered Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone through a student book report my first year teaching twelve years ago. I remember thinking that it sounded like a book I would enjoy. Little did I know that the rest of the world would join me! After racing through the first four books, I had to wait for Rowling to write and publish the rest. I even went to the midnight release party for the last book. I’ve seen all the movies, and might even stay up for a midnight showing of the very last movie, coming in July.
While you wait for the final installment, learn about the writing wizard behind it all from Riley O and Kerri B. They have two great glogs, too, that you can check out:
Surely you have heard about The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. It’s been hard to miss the buzz around these bestselling books and the upcoming movie. Learn more about the author and her other books, too, from Keenan C.
One of my all-time favorite books from my childhood was My Side of the Mountain. Ever since, I’ve dreamed of running away to the woods to live in a hollowed-out tree. Learn more about the author that created Sam from Adam Do.
I discovered Carrie Ryan’s books this year, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long. Don’t let the zombies scare you off. These books are more than just monsters and mayhem. Check out what Mistina H thinks of Carrie Ryan and zombies, too.
