Poetry Friday: A cherita for fall

Fall is my favorite time of the year. As usual, it is a busy season, but I love nothing better than to take a deep breath of cool, crisp air and admire the show Mother Nature puts on. Here is my attempt at a cherita. (If you want to read some excellent cheritas, head over to Diane Mayr’s blog Random Noodling.

A crisp wind blows

Forest pulls on her
coat of many colors

Then shrugs it off
as leaves do-si-do
against an azure sky

Each Friday, I am excited to take part in Poetry Friday, where writers share their love of all things poetry. Michelle H Barnes hosts the Poetry Friday Roundup today at Today’s Little Ditty. She provides a diary of her week through poetry–and no, i don’t think she’s a basket case at all. These poems are spot on for this week. Hurry over and check out all the poetry morsels offered up today.

I love that you used a specific dance here – do-si-do. It made me wonder about the origins of the word/phrase. Turns out it’s from the French phrase for “back to back”!

Thank you, Laura–especially for teaching me some word history! Of course, my first association with do-si-do (after the dance step) is Girls Scout cookies!

Square-dancing leaves! So warm and cheerful, Kay – and very welcome in a weary world. Thank you for sharing!

Great imagery employed in your poem Kay. Enjoyed your Cherita. Having recently dabbled in this form, it was great to see more. Love Autumn and the colours it so graciously delivers.

Thanks, Alan. I’m enjoying exploring this form. Diane makes it look so easy, but as with much poetry, what looks effortless when finished hides the work that went into it.

I enjoyed your cherita, Kay, and want to place it in the gallery. Is that fine with you? We have had some chilly winds that whooshed the leaves of the branches but other ones are hanging on. In fact, I was thinking that earlier and photographed a small tree that is still grabbing its leaves despite the do-si-dos.(wonderful choice of words)

Thanks, Carol. My plan is to send it to you for the fall gallery. I just haven’t had time to check and adjust the size. There may be more coming, too!

The best kind of happy dance, that leaf do-si-do! Just what I needed to draw me out of my basket. Thanks, Kay! 🙂

Thanks, Michelle. Based on the poems you shared this week, your basket isn’t a bad place to hang out–at least it helps us get through a difficult week.

I love how Poetry Friday poems and forms cross-pollinate and we find the honey all over!
Our trees haven’t shrugged their coat off yet…I hope they hang on a little longer!

Wonderful, Kay. I love the idea of those leaves doing a ‘do-si-do’. Ours are nearly finished with dancing (except for the oaks who hold on) and even the clean-up is close to done. Happy November!

Thanks, Linda. Happy November to you, too! Our leaves are falling quickly, but the clean up is just beginning in earnest.

Kay, this is beautiful – both the pulling on and shrugging off. Thank you!

Thanks, Irene. One of the things I love about fall is the pull between beginning and ending, putting things on and off

Thanks, Michelle. The leaves have been doing much do-si-doing this week with all the wind.
