Poetry Friday: Haiku Reflections

Most of my poetry this week has come from my morning devotional time. I’ve been reading the letters of Paul–those to Timothy this week. Even though the cultural contexts between that time and ours are very different, I’ve been struck by how much some things–especially human nature–has not changed. Here are a few haiku responses from my readings this week.

lift your hearts to God
pray for everyone you know
pray for peace

professional liars
lost capacity for truth
twisted reality

ignorant windbags
lust after money and power
bring nothing but trouble

a devout life brings wealth–
being yourself before God
is enough

pursue a righteous life
full of wonder, faith, love, courtesy
live in God’s kingdom

pious talk
not backed by a godly life
poisons the soul

Each Friday, I am excited to take part in Poetry Friday, where writers share their love of all things poetry. Molly Hogan hosts the Poetry Friday Roundup today at Nix the Comfort Zone. . She shares a beautiful sonnet that refused to let her give up. Drop by and see what poetry morsels are offered this week. Remember to flay along with Christie Wyman next week as she hosts Poetry Friday and invites us to share a bird poem.

    Your last needs remembering:
    “pious talk
not backed by a godly life
    poisons the soul”

Thanks, Donna. So much of these letters hit home for me that week.

Yes, the more things change…. Sigh. Thanks for sharing your reflections; a positive way to express reactions to negativity!

Thanks, Robyn. I often found myself writing two responses–one focused more on the negative and one more on the positive.

Wow! What a productive result from devotion time. I am struck by the connections you make. I’ve been away from devotions for too long. Time to get back to it!

Thanks, Linda. Those few moments in the morning have been the only time I’ve had this week for reflection, stillness, and poetry. I needed it. I hope this week is a little less busy.

Thanks, Linda. They speak to me as I am reading and reflecting. I’m glad they may speak to others, too.

Love these little insights–especially the last one. Too many people’s words and actions do not match. Thanks for sharing your poems.

Thanks for sharing these with us. “Wealth” has many manifestations, doesn’t it, and “Courtesy” is a lovely, underutilized word! I especially like your last haiku.

Thanks, Tabatha. Oh, wealth is so rich with its many faces! I do hope we can build more courtesy into our world.

Thank you for drawing these connections between those ancient words and our modern day. Keep speaking the truth even as Paul did.

Thanks for reading! I am constantly amazed at how true the words of Scripture ring today despite the differences in time and place.
