Hope pokes

Hope pokes
out of battered lives
and shattered souls
like a dandelion
sprouts from a crack
in broken concrete.
Green leaves fringe
a burst of gold
and sends roots
down into the earth,
drawing strength
from deep below
and spreading new life
across the world.

PO-EMotions graphicAfter watching and reading the April poetry challenge by Mary Lee Hahn at A Year of Readingfor the past several years, I decided to write a poem a day this month. Mary Lee is hosting PO-EMotion, with a different emotion for each day of the month. Today’s focus is HOPE. For even more poetry fun throughout April, check out the roundup of poetry celebrations and projects at Jama’s Alphabet Soup.

Plants growing through cracks in cement or tar always make me happy. It’s like you can’t kill nature, it’ll find a way. Thanks for this beautiful poem.

Love that you used the dandelion’s strength and resilience for hope, Kay. It’s lovely.

I do love dandelions–how they always bloom everywhere and spread.

Kay, this snapshot is filled with spring’s hope. I love the idea that hope pokes out. It is a strong statement that it wants to break the shackles of despair and boundaries.

I think the strongest example of hope I’ve seen have been in the midst of the direst circumstances.

I love this- a snapshot very different from Mary Lee’s, but equally hopeful.
