A Change of Plans

imageI’m taking part in the weekly Slice of Life Challenge sponsored by  Two Writing Teachers, where teachers write and share each Tuesday. Join in yourself or head over to check out what’s happening with other slicers. If you’re taking part in the SOL, leave a link to your post. I’d love to read it.

When I got up this morning, the first thing I did was peek out the windows.  Nope, no snow yet.  The yard looked wet, but not too frozen with the temperature hovering right around the freezing point.  Over breakfast comes the frequent discussion from this winter:  Do we try to drive into to church?  The roads don’t look icy yet, but all the forecasts say it is coming, and quickly.  Then we get the text, “10:30 services cancelled.  Call the people who sit near you and let them know.”

Now the day stretches before me with nothing to do but snuggle up with my family and stay warm at home.  I somehow graded and recorded all the homework and quizzes I brought home yesterday, and lesson plans are written (probably pointless since we may miss more school), so today is mine.  What will I do?  Probably not all of these, but I girl can dream big!

  • Read some good books.

image

  • Write!  I have several book reviews to catch up on and a poem tugging at my pen.

image

  • Capture memories in my scrapbook.  Maybe I can finally get those pictures from 2010 glued down.

image

  • Ride nowhere on the exercise bike.  Actually, I’ll probably visit far off lands while I pedal in place.

image

  • Cook a big pot of butternut squash soup (my husband’s favorite) as long as we don’t lose power.  If we do, maybe we’ll try out the new smoker.

image

  • Can I talk someone into playing board games, too?  Or putting together a puzzle?

image

  • Of course, I have to redo my nails and maybe even talk my daughter into jazzing them up with her new nail stamps.

What a lovely post! It reminded me of living in MN when I grew up, snowed in and happy for it. The line that really struck a chord with me was: “Call the people who sit near you and let them know.” We always, always sit in the same place in church, and these behaviors can create such a sense of community.

    Hey Kay,
What a great way to share your day in images and words! I don’t think we are getting much snow now and that’s fine with me.

We didn’t get near what the forecast had called for, but it started snowing again late afternoon. We’ll see what happens overnight.

You have such great options! I like the sound of that soup, too. Snow days are perfect making soup days.

Fortunately the weather is holding off the worst stuff because I forgot several things for the soup yesterday. My husband made a run to the grocery store to get the rest.

Enjoy the little break! I have a Cub Scout event today… but we’re likely to end up with a day off tomorrow.

Many people took from this post the gift of snow days and slowing down to enjoy them. I took from this post how we are creatures of habit. I had to laugh when I read the church text. “Call the people who sit next to you and let them know.” Isn’t it funny how we create those habits – like sitting in the same place in church! Anyway, I hope you enjoy your slowed-down day!

Oh yes, we are creatures of habit! Our church has been known to shake things up on April Fool’s Day by switching our seats around.

What a wonderful opportunity to connect with your family and to take time for yourself. I love the images you’ve included. You’ve reminded me I need to break up my blogs with pictures! I’m such a word person, that’s easy for me to forget.

I often forget to include pictures, but had the time to take ones this morning.

I live in Portland, OR and love when weather shuts down the city. It is like a gift. Everybody gets to slow way down.

What a wonderful day ahead of you! Mine looks similar except that I wasn’t as efficient as you yesterday. I need to grade! Enjoy your day. 🙂

Enjoy the moments between the grading! Fortunately, I had a long car ride to get lots of grading done. I’m so glad I don’t get carsick!

Isn’t it great how the power of nature can literally force is to stop and totally re-evaluate? Hoping your snow day brings you many moments to cherish … And I loved the imagery of the poem tugging at your pen, looking forward to rearing it!

We’ve had a lot of these gifts this winter. I suspect we may have tomorrow off, too. It’s going to be hard to make them all up, so we might as well enjoy the time we’re given.
