Week at a Glance: November 4 – 8

Monday

Objectives:

  • Define Group 5 Vocabulary Roots.
  • Read and understand a poem that uses figurative language.
  • Describe and practice good group discussion.

Daily Grammar Practice Week 8 (Monday – parts of speech).  I will give you the definitions of Group 5 Vocabulary Roots.  We will often read and discuss literature in small groups called literature circles.  We’ll practice our first ones today!  Together we will read and take notes on the poem “How to Eat a Poem” by Eve Merriman. Use the Discussion Notes to write down what catches your attention or confuses you.  Then I will ask for volunteers to model a discussion of the poem.  Then it’s your turn.  Read and take notes on “You Enter a Poem” by Robin Hirsch to prepare for your discussions.
Homework:  Read 15-30 minutes in a book of your choice. Group 5 Vocabulary Roots due Friday .

Tuesday

Objectives:

  • Identify important events that reveal character for your Character Highway.
  • Describe character traits that you share with and are different from your main character in the t-chart.
  • Read and take discussion notes on “Amigo Brothers.”

Daily Grammar Practice Week 8 (Tuesday – sentence parts).  I will explain and answer questions you have about the Character Highway and t-chart you need to complete while reading the book for your book project.  After introducing the short story “Amigo Brothers, ” you will read and take discussion notes to prepare for discussion tomorrow.  For your notes, compare and contrast the two main characters, ask questions you have about the story, note parts that confuse you or vocabulary that is new to you. Put your notes in your Writer’s Notebooks.
Homework: Read a book of your choice for 15-30 minutes. Group 5 Vocabulary Roots due Friday.

Wednesday

Objectives:

  • Identify elements of good discussion.
  • Apply elements of good discussion to discussion of “Amigo Brothers.”

Daily Grammar Practice Week 8 (Wednesday – clauses, sentence type and purpose).  What should you see and hear during a good group discussion of literature?  After we discuss and identify these things, you get to practice by discussing the story you read yesterday.  Yes, you should bring your notes to your discussion!  After the discussion, you will have time to reflect on what worked well in your discussions and what could work better.
Homework:  Read 15-30 minutes in a book of your choice.  Group 5 Vocabulary Roots due Friday.

Thursday

Objectives:

  • Identify theme in “Amigo Brothers.”
  • Analyze how setting influences theme.

Daily Grammar Practice Week 8 (Thursday – Correct capitalization and punctuation and Friday – Diagramming).  What is the topic or big idea in “Amigo Brothers”?  Use clues from the setting, characters, and conflicts to come up with a possible theme for this story.  Write a paragraph in your Writer’s Notebooks that explain what you think the theme is and give at least three examples to support it.  Be sure to include the title and the author in your paragraph as well as a sentence that clearly states the theme.
Homework: Read 15-30 minutes in a book of your choice. Group 5 Vocabulary Roots due Friday.

Friday

Objectives:

  • Complete Benchmark Assessment.

After setting a reading goal for next week, log in to my.hrw.com and complete the next benchmark assessment.
