Look what we’ve been reading

Once again, you amaze me.  You are reading more and more.  Here are the totals for the end of the third grading period.   Drumroll, please…..

For a grand total, 129 students  have read 2,809 books!  That’s an average of 21.8 books per student.

Here it is broken down by class period:

  • 2nd Period:  30 students read 852 books, for an average of 28.4 books per student
  • 3rd Period:  26 students read 544 books, for an average of 20.9 books per student
  • 5th Period:  29 students read 549 books, for an average of 18.9 books per student
  • 6th Period:  21 students read 422 books, for an average of 20.1 books per student
  • 7th Period:  23 students read 442 books, for an average of 19.2 books per student
Did you know 8th graders could read so much?  I did.  Do you want to know what the most popular books have been this year?  Here are the five most recommended books, based on your blog posts.
Want to Go Private by Sarah Darer Littman (Scholastic Press 2011) – author of upcoming Skype visit with 2nd period
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic Press 2008) – soon to be a movie:  May the odds be ever in your favor.
The Pull of Gravity by Gae Polisner (Farrar Straus Giroux 2011) – author who had fabulous Skype visit with 5th period
Gym Candy by Carl Deuker (Houghton Mifflin 2007) – one of this year’s Young Hoosier nominees
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers 2009) – Are fallen angels the new vampires?
Which of these books have you read?  Which do you want to read?

Thanks! I’m impressed with them, too! We are trying to top 4,000–or at least see how close we can get–by the end of the year.

I’m showing this to my freshmen tomorrow because I’m really impressed! What kinds of books are they reading? Is this mostly YA? Are they reading picture books and graphic novels as well? I’d love to see my students read so many books!

It’s a wide variety of books and readers. Most are reading YA or middle grade books. Some are reading graphic novels & picture books. Every student has read five or more books. Most have read over ten books. Some have read over fifty books. I am impresssed and amazed. Check the student blogs (by class period under my blogroll) to see their reactions to some of the books they’ve read.
