Week at a Glance: February 7 – 11

Monday

Read and collect interesting vocabulary words.  You should have all 10 words finished by Wednesday.   You will turn in your vocabulary words on paper instead of the blog. 
HOMEWORK: Read 30 minutes. Choose five words for Weekly Word Study.

Tuesday

Read and collect vocabulary for for Literature Journals on the blog. All 10 words are due tomorrow.  The vocabulary paper should be titled “Vocabulary for ____________ (Title of book) by ___________ (author). For each vocabulary word, list the word, the sentence from the book that uses the word (Remember author’s last name and page number in parentheses), and a defintion in your own words.  Click here for an example.  Choose one of the words to write a context clue.  Write a paragraph of at least 50 words that shows the meaning of your word.  You will post on your blog tomorrow..  Then leave comments on five classmates, guessing what you think their word means from their context clue. 
HOMEWORK: Read 30 minutes. Ten vocabulary words due tomorrow.

Wednesday

Read and work on Literature Journals. Post your context clue on blog.  Click here for the example I shared in class yesterday.  Write a personal identification for vocabulary. Pick a word that is either like you or unlike you. Write a topic sentence that says if the word is like or unlike you. Give three examples–be specific–from your life that show how you are like or unlike this word. It must be at least 100 words. (Use the word count tool in Open Office, then copy and paste using CTRL-V).  Click here for my example using the word frazzled.
Homework: Read 30 minutes. Word Study due tomorrow.

Thursday

Choose one of your vocabulary words and write a personification of the word.  If your word was a character, what kind of character would it be?  In 150 words, describe the character.  See your notes for examples or click here for my characterization of cadence.
HOMEWORK: Word Study due today. Read 30 minutes. Get your reading log signed.

Friday

Find an image that illustrates one of your vocabulary words.  Write a caption underneath your picture that uses the vocabulary word.  Click here for directions on how to legally find, inlcude, and attribute an image for your blog.  If you’re not convinced that it matters whether or not you legally download an image or music or books, read what an author/artist has to say about how illegal downloads affect her in “Free Books Aren’t Free.” 
HOMEWORK: Reading Log due TODAY. Read over the weekend.
