What do you think of the author’s choice of poem, use of voice, style of gestures?

Wow! I was surprised at the response this poem got yesterday. Some classes even broke out into applause after hearing this one. I chose to share this one with you because of the powerful message of the poem she chose to perform: her words and music help her overcome the challenges she faced, including being bullied. Words are a powerful way to express and defend yourself.

I think she made good choices with her use of voice and gestures as well. Her gestures weren’t over the top, but emphasized the meaning of her poem in important places. Did you notice how she mimicked writing on a pad of paper and pointed to her head when she spoke about those things. She used pauses to great effect–especially the long pause where people thought she was done.
